In the context of her seminar “Technobodies. Capacities, limits and transformations”, Prof. Dr. Patricia Ribault invited me to present my work on body modifications.
My conference will be like a journey among different kinds of voluntarily modified bodies and will question how Technique is being used both as a tool and a mean of expression to pursue these goals and to perform such acts.
A categorization will be proposed of contemporary body hackers who act on their own bodies in at least 5 directions:
• The “handymen” of the human machine
• The identity transgressors
• The sensation tinkerers
• The pirates of appearances
• The « combo-hackers »
All this types have been developed in previous conferences (see here).
For these types of body modifications, I will discuss how some people create themselves the technical apparatus (tools, gestures, operations, devices) necessary to these transformations, therefore how they generate a new kind of craftsmanship (I call them the “craftsmen of the flesh”).
I will also raise some issues about the sociological and philosophical perspectives given by these new techniques.
